1500-1699 Since I am mostly interested in narrative, I give short shrift to poets and philosophers from this point on, although a representative selection of major English poets (at least through the 19th century) do appear throughout, as well as a few major poets from other languages (primarily Italian). Still, English authors you might expect to see—e.g., Thomas Wyatt, Edmund Spenser (The Faerie Queen and Epithalamium), Sir Philip Sydney (Astrophel and Stella), Thomas Campion, Andrew Marvell, Thomas Wyatt, George Herbert, John Dryden, Thomas Gray (“Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard”), Elizabeth Barrett Browning, John Greenleaf Whittier, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Algernon Charles Swinburne, A. E. Housman, and many other later poets well worth reading—are not listed here. Nor will one find Robert Burton’s Anatomy of Melancholy or Sir Thomas Browne’s Urne-Buriall, which some may find interesting, or later works by scientists such as Copernicus and Galileo or philosophers such as Giambattista Vico. As for English and American poets, I recommend you read a good anthology, such as The Norton Anthology of Poetry and The Oxford Book of American Verse. For Italian poets not included below, one might read the Renaissance authors: Gaspara Stampa, Veronica Franco, and Pietro Bembo, the 18th century poets Pietro Metastasio, Giuseppe Parini, and Vittorio Alfieri (listed below for his plays), and the 19th century poet Ugo Foscolo (listed below for his fiction). For later Italian poets not mentioned below, I recommend Dino Campana, Orphic Songs; Umberto Saba; and Salvatore Quasimodo; in addition to others below. For early French poets: among others, Marguerite de Navarre’s |
||
The Heptameron, and later poets such as Alphonse de Lamartine, Alfred de Vigny, Aloysius Bertrand, Alfred de Musset, Stéphane Mallarmé, Paul Verlaine, Guillaume Apollinaire, André Breton, René Char, and Paul Éluard, to cite a few. For Spanish poets: Jorge Manrique, Diego de San Pedro (Cárcel de amor), Antonio de Guevara, Jorge de Montemayor, Francisco de Quevedo, Fray Luis de León, St. John of the Cross, Luis de Góngora, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, and the later poets, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, Antonio Machado, Jorge Guillén, and Federico García Lorca, among others. For German poets: Novalis, Hölderlin, Heinrich Heine, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Stefan George. Playwrights as famous as John Ford (’Tis Pity She’s a Whore), Pierre Corneille (The Cid), Jean Racine (Phaedra, Andromache), and Jean Anouilh (Becket, Eurydice) are not listed below, nor are German writers such as Friedrich Schiller (Mary Stuart, Don Carlos) and Gotthold Lessing (Laocoön, Nathan the Wise). English essayists are also in short supply, for which one might cite: William Hazlitt, Charles Lamb, Thomas Carlyle, John Ruskin, and Walter Pater. |

1900-2000 A few authors of popular fiction who have been very prolific are listed only once or twice (unless there are compelling reasons to add other titles) under the assumption that a reader who enjoys their work will find other books on their own. These authors include Edward S. Aarons, Desmond Bagley, Lawrence Block, Agatha Christie, Dick Francis, Sue Grafton, Zane Grey, Jack Higgins (Harry Patterson), Patricia Highsmith, Hammond Innes, Helen MacInnes, Alistair MacLean, Ed McBain, Robert B. Parker, Georges Simenon, and Ross Thomas. From this point on most (but not all) of the works listed are fiction. As regards titles from the 1960s on, this list favors novels of suspense, although I have tried to include a sampling of so-called serious literary fiction and a representative selection of works in other forms of popular fiction, e.g., horror, sci-fi, romance, fantasy, teen lit., and so forth. Still, the list is not balanced from that point on. Date Read Author’s Life Span Author and Title |
