Cooper, Mike. Clawback. Viking. Mar. 2012. c400p. ISBN 978-0-670-02329-5. $26.95. Fiction

Cooper (a pseudonym for Michael Wiecek, author of Exit Strategy and winner of a Shamus Award for short fiction) turns to the world of high finance in this enjoyable thriller. Ex-Special Forces operative Silas Cade, now a financial problem solver, has been hired by Quint Gunderson, a billionaire investment banker, to stop a killer who appears to be targeting money managers of poor-performing hedge funds. With the help of blogger and independent journalist Clara Dawson and a host of other contacts on the shady side of the street, Silas is forced to ward off evermore vicious attacks as he seeks to find not just the killer but the person behind a conspiracy to manipulate the stock market and make for another sort of "killing." Verdict This reads like a made-for-TV movie with a pleasing mix of action, sleuthing, clever tricks, a slow-developing romance, and far-out chase scenes. A great start for what one hopes is a series character, this will appeal to anyone who likes a fast-moving thriller leavened by wit.
